24 Hours in Galway City

To truly experience a city, I need to explore and discover for myself.  I love a recommendation, or some background history, but not to much that my day is dictated by a strict itinerary.  So if you are heading to the west of Ireland and have 24 hours in Galway, here are a few stops that are worth a look!

Shop Street is the hub of Galway City; packed with street performers and shops that are jammed with Aran sweaters and Wacky Wooly merchandise!  It’s one of those streets you meander down and find yourself dipping in and out of shops, cafe’s and pubs.

Fancy a coffee?  Sneak into Coffee Werk  + Press.  A unique little gem on Shop Street that offers hot and cold pressed coffee, together with a quirky shop on the second floor and a gallery on the third.

A collection of vinyls and a record player provided some Bob Dylan tunes while my husbands sips his coffee and flicks through one of the many books lying about.

I found a window seat to watch the world go by.

Lunch or dinner?  Easy – head to McDonagh’s.  The ultimate stop for fish and chips!  We queued for 1/2 hour, and then squeezed onto a bench between other fish and chip eaters, and worth every minute of it.  Delish!!

Venture off Shop Street for quirky little shops and eye candy.  Being a flower lover, I was really taken by ‘Yes Flowers’.  Next store was a fantastic antique shop, but I didn’t get the name 😦 . (Much to my husbands delight!)

A short drive South on the  N 18 South, 20 minutes form Galway, you will find ‘Morans on the Weir’.  A renowned fish restaurant that boasts an authentic thatch cottage, an extensive sea food menu, the best brown bread and creamy Guinness around.

If you have room in your suitcase, you could also pop into the best antique shop I have even been in on Irish soil.  The collection of Irish linen was enviable…

I was not permitted to take photos inside, but trust me, it was a treasure trove!

Galway is steeped in history, these little gems are a pleasant distraction from the tourist hub. Enjoy!
